How to Calculate Paint & Quantity per Square Meter (2026 Guide)

⏱️ 6 min read🎨 Architectural / finishing📐 Estimating presets

This guide estimates wall and ceiling area and paint quantity using calculator assumptions. Coverage, putty, coat count and opening area are not fixed properties of every product or substrate; check the product technical data sheet and application system before ordering.

🧮 The Paint Calculation Formula

Wall area = 2 × (width + length) × height − openings

The calculator assumes 1.5kg/m² of putty, primer = area ÷ coverage, and two finish coats at 0.85 of that quantity each. These are internal quantity factors, not a verified product rate or mandatory coat count.

📋 Steps to Calculate Paint

  1. Calculate the wall area: Wall area = 2 × (width + length) × height. The calculator deducts 2m² per opening as a preset; use measured dimensions for real takeoff.
  2. Add the ceiling if needed: If you will paint the ceiling, add its area = width × length to the total area.
  3. Add an estimating allowance: The calculator adds 10%; adjust the actual order for substrate, application method and product data.
  4. Set the coverage rate: Use a calculator preset for an initial estimate, then replace coverage with the product rate for your substrate and application; preset labels are not code requirements.
  5. Calculate primer and coats: Primer (undercoat) = area ÷ coverage (a full coat), and each finish coat = area ÷ coverage × 0.85.
  6. Calculate putty and round cans: Cement putty = area × 1.5 kg/m², then round the paint liters up to the nearest can size.

✅ Worked Example

A 4m × 5m room, 3m high, with two openings estimated at 2m² each and the ceiling painted. The calculator preset uses 10 m²/L coverage and 10% waste; litres display one decimal:

Walls = 2×(4+5)×3 − 2×2 = 50 m² · Ceiling = 20 m² · Total = 70 m²
+ 10% waste = 70 × 1.1077 m²
Cement putty = 77 × 1.5115.5 kg
Primer (undercoat) = 77 ÷ 107.7 L
First coat = 77 ÷ 10 × 0.856.5 L
Final coat = 77 ÷ 10 × 0.856.5 L

Enter the same values in the Paint Calculator and you'll get the exact same result — these values come from the calculator's own formulas.

ASTM (معطل / disabled)————
⚠️ The 4×5m, 3m-high example assumes two 2m² openings and a 20m² ceiling = 70m², plus the tool's 10% allowance = 77m². The 0.85 finish-coat factor and 1.5kg/m² putty are presets; check the TDS and substrate before ordering.

🛡️ Coverage, Coats, and Preparation Limits

The SBC, ECP and BS menu labels yield estimated coverages of 10, 9 and 10m²/L. The ASTM option is disabled because it has no independent factor; the ASTM paint reference does not establish these rates or coat counts. Actual consumption depends on product data and substrate.

Initial tool factors: putty 1.5 kg/m², primer = area ÷ coverage, each finish coat = area ÷ coverage × 0.85, and 10% waste. Compare with the product technical data sheet before ordering. Related: Plaster guide · Tiles guide.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How many litres of paint per square metre?
At the tool's 10m²/L preset it assumes 0.1L/m² primer and 0.085L/m² for each finish coat before its 10% allowance. These are example factors; use product TDS rates.
How many paint cans do I need for a room?
Example: a 4×5m room, 3m high, with the ceiling ≈ 70 m², needs 7.7 L primer + two coats of 6.5 L each (~20.7 L paint total) + 115.5 kg putty. Round the liters up to the nearest can size.
How many coats are needed?
The tool estimates a primer and two finish coats. Actual coat count follows the product system, substrate, colour and project specification.
Is the primer (undercoat) necessary?
Yes on new, puttied, or porous surfaces — it evens the absorption, improves adhesion, and reduces topcoat consumption, saving money in the long run.
How much putty per square meter before painting?
The tool assumes 1.5kg/m² before waste as an estimate; use putty product data and surface condition for actual coverage.
How much does a paint can actually cover?
That depends on the product, package volume, substrate and application method. Use coverage and coat count from its technical data sheet (TDS).
