How to Calculate Concrete Volume & Materials (2026 Guide)

⏱️ 6 min read🏗️ Quantity estimate📐 Mix is project-specific

This guide calculates element volume from dimensions, then estimates concrete materials with calculator factors. Its C20–C40, water and waste factors are estimates, not an approved mix design or universal code requirements; project specifications, exposure and testing determine the actual mix and durability.

🧮 The Core Concrete Volume Formula

Volume (m³) = Length × Width × Thickness — computed per element, then identical elements are summed:

Set any allowance from site measurements and supply method; the calculator uses fixed material factors by grade for estimating. It does not separately apply a 1.54 dry-volume factor, and these values are not a mix design.

📋 Steps to Calculate Concrete

  1. Determine element dimensions: Measure length, width, and thickness in meters for each concrete element (footing, column, grade beam, slab).
  2. Calculate the volume: Multiply Length × Width × Thickness for each element and sum identical elements to get the total volume in cubic meters.
  3. Set the quantity allowance: Compare geometric volume with actual supply; any allowance depends on site and pour conditions, not a fixed code percentage.
  4. Choose the entered grade: Use the grade specified in project drawings and specifications; calculator grade names do not prescribe a grade for each element.
  5. Compute material quantities: Multiply the volume by the grade factors: cement (kg/m³), sand (m³/m³), and gravel (m³/m³) — see the reference table below.
  6. Convert to bags and water: Divide the cement weight by 50 and round up for the number of bags, and compute mixing water = cement weight × water/cement ratio (w/c).

✅ Worked Example

A solid slab pour of 10m × 8m × 0.20m at grade C25:

Volume = 10 × 8 × 0.20 = 16 m³
Cement = 16 × 360 = 5760 kg ÷ 50116 bags
Sand = 16 × 0.406.40 m³
Gravel = 16 × 0.8012.80 m³
Mixing water = 5760 × 0.553168 L
Mix ratio1 : 1.5 : 3

Enter a 10×8×0.20m rectangle and C25 in the calculator. It applies no waste allowance in this example. The 5,760kg of cement rounds up to 116 whole 50kg bags; material and water factors are calculator assumptions, not an approved mix.

⚠️ These are calculator estimating factors tied to the selected grade and unchanged by code selection. Do not use them as a mix design or concrete order without checking project specifications and the supplier.

💧 Water/Cement Ratio & the Saudi SBC Code

Water/cement ratio is mixing-water mass divided by cement mass. The calculator uses preset ratios from 0.60 for C20 to 0.42 for C40; actual strength or durability cannot be inferred without mix design and testing.

🛡️ The ACI 318 reference covers structural-concrete design, not the calculator's mix rates. The calculator shows an internal warning above 0.50 and compares cement with 315kg/m³; we found no direct support for treating either number as a universal limit for every exposure. The badge is not proof of compliance with the applicable code.

Set exposure class, materials, pour conditions and curing from the project specification and approved mix design.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How many cement bags are in one cubic meter of concrete?
For reinforced C25 concrete about 360 kg, i.e. ~7.2 bags (50 kg) per cubic meter. The count rises for higher grades: C30 ≈ 8 bags, and C40 ≈ 9.4 bags per m³.
What differs between the C25 and C30 calculator presets?
The model changes cement, sand, gravel and water factors by selected input grade. Those factors alone do not prove actual mix strength or prescribe use in a particular element.
Should I deduct the steel volume when calculating concrete?
No, in practice the reinforcement steel volume is not deducted because its share of the volume is very small (about 1–2%) and deducting it complicates the calc with negligible benefit. Use the full element volume.
How much sand and gravel per cubic meter of concrete?
For C25 concrete you need approximately 0.40 m³ of sand and 0.80 m³ of gravel per cubic meter. These values change slightly with the strength grade as shown in the reference table above.
What water-to-cement ratio should I use?
The calculator assumes 0.55 for C25 and 0.50 for C30 estimates. The actual mix ratio depends on exposure class, specifications and approved mix design; this calculator does not set a universal limit.
How do I calculate ribbed (Hordi) slab concrete?
Calculate rib and topping volumes from actual drawings and sum them; do not assume one slab-wide proportion or a topping thickness absent from the project.
